Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

The EcoChallenge really expanded my view of what it means to be sustainable.  There were several topics I encountered in this initiative that I hadn't connected to the overall environmental/social/governance mission. But even a simple nature walk, spending more time in the environment, better connected me to my surroundings.
I am also reminded how great the Carlisle team is!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

I've recently begun separating compost material, and it's made me more deliberate about my purchasing and eating habits. I used to throw food out regularly and without care. In addition to composting for my friend's garden, I am trying to be mindful of persistent, global food insecurity, and not buying what I won't eat or can't compost. While individual efforts may seem trivial, my hope is this challenge ignites awareness and action among others!

There's a nature trail I've run on regularly for probably six years now. The EcoChallenge prompted me to stop and immerse myself, utilizing my senses, instead of rushing to my next function. It's amazing how, for all the hours spent on that trail, I'd never truly experienced it until now.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Go by Bike
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking, or driving?

Riding my bike might actually adversely affect my engagements in the community. When I'm driving I'm subject to fewer car horns and obscenities.
Perhaps this is an indicator that I, too, need to work on safety and etiquette.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Andrew Razanauskas's avatar
    Andrew Razanauskas 4/08/2022 11:03 AM
It does. For me, it helps illustrate the cause I care about. It's easier to empathize with individuals or groups when we more intimately know them. Similarly, I'm finding that when I'm spending more time in genuine reflection in my environment, I'm that much more inclined to fight for its preservation. So, in my view, herein lies your cultural implication. More people in touch with nature will likely mean more advocates!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Express My Support
What sustainability issues are most pressing or prominent on your campus? In your hometown? Where you live currently?

    Andrew Razanauskas's avatar

Because I work closely with our local food bank, I'm inclined to say food insecurity is a top concern. The Borough of Carlisle has poverty levels above state and nationwide averages. Knowing this, there are invariably other problems resulting from these disparities, which I ought to better understand so I can help educate others and advocate causes.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Limit Social Media
Social media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?

I've given up Facebook for lent, as I've done in the past, and I realize how heavily I use it and how much energy it requires. I've replaced some time with news and other forms of media, but have significantly reduced my average screen time, creating time for healthier activities. I've felt less need for validation, and my reduced doomscrolling elevates my mood and outlook. Perhaps staying off after lent ends isn't such a bad idea?

Elated to see the progress and discussion already.  It's going to be a great month!
