Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?

My eating experiences tend to be more enjoyable and social when I practice mindfulness. My husband and I make an effort a few times a week to enjoy our dinner together without any type of distraction. It allows us time to connect and enjoy the food we've prepared.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

Meat can be expensive depending on the product, so it is logical that richer countries consume more meat. Eating meat has some negative agricultural and environmental implications. Not eating meat can be more affordable as well as a healthier choice.

I agree with Jenna! Because meat is more expensive, it is often seen as a luxury item. Once you have more money (especially if you come from an impoverished country) you can afford to eat things like steak more often. In many ways, it becomes a status symbol of how well off you have become.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I use plastic utensils to eat my lunch at work. I will try to be mindful about bringing in silverware from home to use and wash throughout the week.  I make a point to use a reusable water bottle, mug, straw and plastic bags.
