REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Engage In Active ListeningWhat was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation(s) benefit from active listening?
Lindsey Lyons 4/19/2022 7:41 AMI am not the best listener- this I know. I love talking and sharing ideas..... I need to listen very consciously. I set myself up for this conversation and it was super beneficial for both sides, but I had definitely had to focus and go against instincts to speak. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Limit Social MediaSocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Lindsey Lyons 4/19/2022 7:35 AMSocial media to me brings about the same amount of joy and stress to me. I have tried to eliminate people and pages that caused stress, and find most of my friends on there share positive info and I so use it as a way to connect with family and friends elsewhere- which fulfills me. The challenge is balance. I like the joy it brings me at times, but I don't want it to replace real interactions with people- LIVE! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?
Lindsey Lyons 4/19/2022 7:01 AMI know that spending time outside rechargers and refreshes me! I always feel better and more productive after returning from the outdoors. The challenge is making the time! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity MeditateWhat would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?
Lindsey Lyons 4/19/2022 6:55 AMI have been working to invest more time in reflecting on relationships with others. Making time for valuable and genuine interactions and making sure I am being all I can to others. You have to make time and space to reflect on this. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Lindsey Lyons 4/14/2022 7:57 AMI wish I had more time to be creative as I do think they are connected for sure! Convenience drives most of my unsustainable behaviors. Being creative can allow you to see old things in new ways which can promote resuse and a simpler way of knowing and doing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Less Screen TimeWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Lindsey Lyons 4/14/2022 7:45 AMI realized there is a lot of things I can do instead of screen time, the greatest challenge is just breaking the habit in the first place of looking/checking often. I have been leaving my phone by the door when I come in the house versus carrying it with/on me. I do think it has increased conversation time with my kids which I am happy about. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Lindsey Lyons 4/11/2022 1:23 PMMeat consumption is responsible for releasing greenhouse gases such as methane, CO2, and nitrous oxide. These gases contribute to climate change, such as global warming. Livestock farming contributes to these greenhouse gases in several ways:
The destruction of forest ecosystems
Raising livestock
Decaying manure
Fertilizer use
Meat is expensive, hard to store and transport as well. In the US, we certainly take advantage of the system set up to supply us with meat, and few understand the system and processes etc. Supporting local farmers and asking questions on sources can go a LONG way! I do eat meat, but try to eat little and know my sources. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Support A Sharing EconomyWhat benefits does a sharing economy offer to your own life? What benefits does it offer to your neighbors' and community members' lives?
Lindsey Lyons 4/06/2022 6:50 AMA sharing economy can and has saved me a lot of money! We don't all need to have everything. I've built relationships with neighbors over shared tools, equipment, labor etc. We mow for each other when away, plow driveways if needed, borrow tools or even eggs! My neighbor works in construction and is super generous to allow me to borrow anything I ever need. This is especially critical for those infrequent use tools. In Carlisle- check out Carlisle Tool Library also! https://carlisletoollibrary.org/ -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Lindsey Lyons 4/05/2022 6:52 AMI think too much time inside and on screens can desensitize us. We can become more aware of smell, taste, touch, hearing etc. outside. Especially if we pause for reflection. It is important to expose ourselves to the outdoor environment for that stimulation and balance. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Lindsey Lyons 4/05/2022 6:48 AMI am a baseball parents and usually sit with other parents and chit chat during practice. Lately, I have been walking our puppy instead of sitting. I have seen so many new things around the park (that I had been at for years) but never noticed in the hustle and bustle. I'm finding a walk after work is good for me!
