Matt's actions
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products
I will spend 25 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home or dorm room.
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Health
Know My health
I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).
Food
Visit A Local Farm
I will visit a nearby farm to pick my own fruits and veggies.
Community
Engage In Active Listening
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 5 conversations.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 5 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 20 minute(s) each day.
Food
Zero-Waste Cooking
I will cook 2 meal(s) with zero-waste each day
Food
Locally-Sourced Meals
I will source 2 meal(s) each day from local producers.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Food
Whole Food Lifestyle
I will enjoy 1 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
Community
Express My Support
I will find out who in my state makes decisions that impact the environment and express my support for more environmental actions.
Energy
Learn About Renewable Energy
I will spend 120 minutes learning more about renewable energy alternatives (i.e. solar, wind, biomass) in my region.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 35 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 2 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those around the world who produce my food in order to make better choices when I shop.

Matt Demko 4/20/2022 2:09 PMIt's nice day. Spend the evening outside and enjoy the weather!!! -
Matt Demko 4/20/2022 2:06 PMToday is garbage day. Since the local trash company requested that recyclables not be be bagged, I get to walk around the yard and pick up all the pieces from my neighbors that didn't quire make it into the truck. -
Matt Demko 4/19/2022 8:18 PMI finished a strong back tonight. A strong back is used as a frame to build a canoe or a kayak. Instead of buying a new canoe or kayak, I can build one anyway I like and for 1/6 the cost of a new one. This is an outlet for creativity and sustainability as I can pass this kayak on to the next person when I am done with it. The pic is of my last one: -
Matt Demko 4/19/2022 8:01 PMSo I picked up an approximately 50 year old outboard motor today. I have one a few years older that needs some parts. Instead of buying new motor, I can take parts from two otherwise unusable motors and make one thus saving on buying a new one at 6 times the price and keeping the memories alive of the previous owners who used these motors before I was born. -
Matt Demko 4/18/2022 5:22 PMTravel season is starting. Make sure you car is ready. Tire pressure, oil change, use AC instead of windows down all help to maintain fuel mileage. Or try vacationing close to home. -
Matt Demko 4/18/2022 5:15 PMAs we near earth day, many plan to do outdoor activities to celebrate. One common activity is to clean up road sides. No matter where you decide to do this, at work, at home or another place of need, safety first. Where bright clothing or a yellow safety vest so drivers notice you. Wear gloves and closed toe shoes. -
Matt Demko 4/17/2022 7:32 PMSo before leaving my parents house today, I'm asked what container can I use that won't leak to put some home cooking into to take take home. My response, why not use one of the glass jar I use for canning that you are returning to me? MMM mm comfort food and re-using. Great combination. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Matt Demko 4/17/2022 5:47 AMThe easy answer to avoiding air travel is to meet people online. But this doesn't work all of the time. Status meetings obviously can be done online but the actual meet and greet portion of it is lost. A coworker is stringing legs of a trip together instead of making several round trips. This eliminates some flights. Driving is ok for trips up to a few hundred miles. After that, a train or bus could work as long as it is practical. -
Matt Demko 4/17/2022 5:36 AMIt's a great start to the day. The sun is out. Time to crack some eggs.
